Summer on the Pocosin Summer on the Pocosin Lakes is a great time of year. Absent of waterfowl, the refuge is still called home by lots of different species of animals. Song birds, whitetail deer, bobcats and much more can be seen during this time of year. Most of the mammals in the area have had their young, so the chance of seeing baby deer & baby bear are high. The one thing that makes the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge a number one location for wildlife photographers are the large number of black bear. Pocosin Lakes NWR is one of the top locations for photographing black bear in the state of North Carolina. Feeding on the freshly grown crops and winter wheat, you can see as many as 50 different bear a day. Neil Jernigan has been photographing these bear for over 9 years and is now offering photo tours & workshops. Neil will help you better understand their behavior and will be teaching you everything he knows about photographing these beautiful animals.

May 24-27, 2019
Hendersonville / Asheville, NC
Leader(s): Mary Louise Ravese
Difficulty Level: Moderate/Intermediate
Creative Abstract Photography In this intermediate level workshop, instructor Mary Louise Ravese shares some her favorite techniques for creating abstract photographs in the studio and the field. Techniques covered include abstract light painting, intentional camera movement and unique reflections. The combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on photography shooting sessions is sure to spark the imagination and produce some unique and beautiful abstract images. Over the weekend in addition to photographing in the field, participants will work on editing their own images with input, guidance and feedback from Mary Louise and guest speaker and master printer Jeff Miller. The workshop culminates with each participant printing one of their images to take home.

Abstract Photography allows the photographer the freedom to discover and explore "ordinary" subjects from a fresh perspective for the sheer beauty of their characteristics of color, texture and shape. Learning abstract photography techniques is an excellent exercise in expanding and refining the "photographer's eye" and enables participants to create images that are uniquely their own, employing strong visual design elements. It is a valuable learning exercise that will improve not just the participant's ability to make abstract imagery, but take a more creative approach for all types of images from landscapes to macro, and beyond.
Class size limited to 6.

Blue Ridge Mountains, NC
Leader(s): David Culp
Difficulty Level: Moderate/Intermediate
Summer in the Blue Ridge Mountains with David Culp This workshop will focus on photographing scenes that can only be captured during this brief time period where the southeast’s most beautiful blooms create amazing photographic subjects and stunning foregrounds for the mountains and waterfalls of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Whether using your camera, cell phone or another electronic device, knowing when and where to be is key to obtaining the best images. We’ll travel western North Carolina’s most famous byways photographing classic scenes of the area along the way to the day’s best locations.

We will strive to match our locations to weather conditions so while a detailed itinerary is not available, a flexible schedule will be provided as time draws near. If weather permits and conditions are right, we may try to fit in a night shoot as well. I like to keep my groups small to allow for plenty of one on one instruction. We will base ourselves near the Asheville area.

This workshop is for all skill levels. Whether you are new to photography looking to learn the basics, a seasoned photographer looking for new locations to capture great images or simply looking for a guide to seek the beauty nature has to offer, this workshop delivers.

Kenya
Leader(s): Dave Kelly
Difficulty Level: Easy/Beginner
The Best of Kenya This is a five star photo safari to Kenya for the Great Migration. We'll be photographing the big five and multiple other species as well as watching the wildebeests, zebras and gazelles cross the Mara River trying to avoid the crocodiles and hippos in the river, during their great migration from the Serengti in Tanzania to the Mara in Kenya. Because those animals are there, the big cats, other predators and scavengers are also there. We use 8 passenger vehicles but only put 4 people in them and the top of the trucks pop up so we can photograph 360 degrees. We fly game camp to game camp but there is no weight limit for luggage because our guides stay with us and drive our heavy bags overnight to the next game camp while we fly. This trip should be on everyone's bucket list.

Fee: 785.00 USD
Minimum 3 Attendees, Maximum 6 Attendees
Registration and Cancelation Deadline: July 20, 2019; FULL REFUND IF CANCELED BY JUNE 15, 2019
1. How can I shift from "taking pictures" to a process grounded in gratitude, in which I receive gifts of Presence from wildlife, the land, even light itself?
2. How can I identify, develop, or further refine my personal style in photography, so that my images reflect my deepest values and loves?
3. How can I increase the number of "keepers" from my photo excursions, and make images that really stand out?
4. I'm fairly new to working in Photoshop. What techniques could help me most in processing images for printing, without getting too technical, overly complicated, or compromising my original vision?
If any of these questions resonate with you, come join Eve Turek in the beautiful North Carolina mountains for this 2 1/2 day immersive workshop. Crafting a Mindful Photographic Practice invites photographers of all skill levels to consider what photography means to them, what their deepest photographic aspirations and inspirations are, and how to translate their personal values and loves into meaningful images through both creative vision and technical choices.
Multiple field opportunities will begin on the Mountain Lens property's 20 acres and will also include off-site excursions. Potential sites, depending on weather and light conditions, may include nearby waterfalls (the region boasts multiple waterfalls within a 30-minute drive), Carl Sandburg's historic home (including red barns and pygmy goats), or scenic Blue Ridge overlooks at the edges of the day. Classroom time will include one-on-one hands-on instruction in Photoshop for novices and more in-depth gentle image critiques for those who need no PS assistance, with a view towards helping all participants recognize the strengths of their own and others' work as all refine their personal styles.
