Good evening. I would be interested to see the original image and what options you have. A portrait orientation might be a good choice, however, an interesting crop is also a 16x9 landscape orientation, which accentuates the bird but gives more context and opportunity for better composition. ...I agree, I would have shot the photo to make sure that the tip of the tail (plus extra) was included.
